Beautiful on the outside. Brilliant, sensitive, and deeply devoted on the inside.

The Collie is far more than a pretty face and a magnificent coat. Originally developed as a working shepherd, the Collie is an intelligent, observant, athletic, and remarkably people-oriented breed. They tend to form incredibly close relationships with their families and often seem to know what their people are thinking before a word is spoken.

But that sensitivity is a defining part of the breed—and it is something prospective owners should understand before bringing a Collie home.

A Collie isn't typically a dog who simply does what you ask because you said so. They want to understand, they notice everything, and they thrive when training is built on trust, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Harsh handling can be particularly damaging to a sensitive Collie's confidence, while thoughtful training can bring out an extraordinary partner.

At Fianna Collies, we believe that loving the breed means understanding all of the breed—not just the beautiful parts. Collies can be affectionate, intuitive, playful, athletic, elegant, goofy, sensitive, vocal, and occasionally a little dramatic. They shed. They notice everything. They may alert you when someone is three houses away. And they will probably follow you into the bathroom.

For the right family, however, there are few dogs quite like a Collie.

THE COLLIE'S GREATEST GIFT—AND GREATEST RESPONSIBILITY

One of the most important things to understand about a Collie is their sensitivity.

Collies are exceptionally tuned in to the people and environment around them. They notice changes in tone, body language, routines, and emotions. This can make them wonderfully responsive training partners—but it also means that they can be affected by how they are handled.

A Collie may shut down under excessive pressure rather than push through it. They often do best when their owner is clear, fair, patient, and consistent.

This does not mean Collies are fragile. A well-bred, appropriately socialized Collie should be capable of navigating new people, places, sounds, environments, and experiences with confidence. It means that their confidence is something worth protecting and thoughtfully building.

The goal isn't to bubble-wrap a Collie from the world. The goal is to teach them that the world is a safe place—and that their person will help them navigate it.

THE THINGS THE COLLIE BROCHURE FORGOT

They shed.
A lot. Especially when they blow coat. Your vacuum will become a member of the family.

They can be vocal.
Collies were bred to notice things. Some will happily announce squirrels, delivery drivers, strange noises, and absolutely nothing at all.

They are sensitive.
“Sensitive” doesn't mean incapable. It means they tend to respond strongly to the way they're handled.

They need mental stimulation.
A walk alone isn't necessarily enough. Training, problem-solving, games, scent work, trick training, and learning new skills can be just as important as physical exercise.

They want a relationship.
Many Collies don't want to spend their lives in the backyard. They want to participate in family life.

They can be wonderfully versatile.
The same dog who looks beautiful in the conformation ring can potentially learn obedience, agility, rally, scent work, herding, tricks, therapy work, or simply become your favorite hiking companion.

They can be quirky.
And honestly? That's part of the fun.

We believe the best Collie homes are not necessarily the people who have always dreamed of owning one.

They're the people who understand what living with one actually involves—and genuinely love those things.

If you're looking for a dog who is intelligent, sensitive, deeply bonded to their family, eager to learn, and happy to participate in life alongside you, a Collie may be an incredible match.

If you're looking for a highly independent dog, a breed that requires little grooming, or a dog that can be trained through corrections and pressure, another breed may suit you better.

And that's okay.
